What Is A Septic Filter? A septic filter is a hard plastic cylinder style screen with thin gills that trap fats, oils, greases, etc. (FOG's) When Were Filters Introduced? Effluent filters were implemented at different times per area/region. Filters started being installed in the early to mid 1990s. Why do I need a Septic Filter? Septic water is full of organic material, hint to why it is not clear like drinking water. This water settles in the floor of the field lines/leach field. As the water percolates through the dirt, the material settles out and over time it builds up. Enough settling will cram up the lines resulting in failure and then septic back up. Installing a filter will cut down on the material settling on the field line floor resulting in extended life of your septic system.
